MailChimp pricing is a bit different than other email marketing providers.
This is because MailChimp has many ways to subscribe to their service. MailChimp has
- a forever free option
- a monthly pricing option
- a credits (pay-as-you-go) pricing option
- and they have a Pro account.
This article breaks down MailChimp pricing so it is easy for you to figure out, at a glance, what plan makes the most sense for you based on your business’ goals.
Before I go further, I’d like to share my quick take on MailChimp’s pricing. I loved having their free account while I figured out what I wanted to do with my email list since I could have the account as long as I wanted; most other email marketing companies do not give you a “forever free” option. This was a huge savings.
Also, recently, I’ve done some in-depth comparisons to two other popular email marketing plans, Constant Contact and GetResponse. In both cases, for my uses, MailChimp’s pricing and features is more economical and the best fit for my business’ needs than the offerings from the other two email marketing providers.
MailChimp’s Forever Free Plan
It’s very easy. MailChimp has a plan that is free for you to use forever. You don’t have to put in a credit card to start the account or have a time limit as to how long you have have the free account. It really is free, forever.
MailChimp’s Forever Free Plan Limitations
- You may have up to 2,000 subscribers.
- You may only send 12,000 emails per month.
- You don’t get to make use of automation features and a few other features.

MailChimp’s Monthly Paid Account
MailChimp’s pricing for monthly accounts increases in price depending on how many subscribers you have. The increments for a pricing increase change depending on how many subscribers you have. By this I mean, at first you will experience a price increase every 500 subscribers, but sometimes your pricing will stay the same until you increase by 100 subscribers, and other times your pricing will increase every 200 subscribers. What is consistent is that the price for your MailChimp monthly subscription goes up by $5.00 each time there’s an increase.
Here’s some MailChimp monthly fee price points for you through 10,000 subscribers:
- Your entry-level MailChimp account price is: $10 a month.
You can have up to 500 subscribers. - Your MailChimp monthly fee will go up by $5.00 for every 500 subscribers until you get to 2,501 subscribers.
- Once you are at 2,501 subscribers, your MailChimp monthly fee will go up by $5.00 for every 100 subscribers until you get to 2,801 subscribers.
- Once you get to 2,801 subscribers, your MailChimp account will stay the same price ($50 a month) until you get to 5,001 subscribers.
- Once you get to 5,001 subscribers, your MailChimp monthly fee will go up by $5.00 for every 200 subscribers until you get to 5,801 subscribers.
- Once you get to 5,801 subscribers, your MailChimp monthly fee will stay the same ($75.00) until you get to 10,001 subscribers.
MailChimp’s Monthly Pricing Plan Limitations
To my knowledge, there aren’t any. You pay $10 a month and you get the same features as someone paying $65 a month. The monthly paid accounts allow you to send as many emails per month as you wish.
Here’s where you can get the details for MailChimp’s monthly paid account (also referred to as the MailChimp Growing Business account).

MailChimp’s Pay by Credit Account Pricing
MailChimp’s Pay by Credit account is great when you don’t send emails very often but
- want all the features of a paid account
- have more subscribers than the free account allows
For instance, if you had 2,400 subscribers, you would pay $30.00 a month with a subscription and you could send unlimited emails. Over 31 months, you’d spend $930. You could send unlimited emails during that time to your 2,400 subscribers.
But let’s say you only send one email a month to your 2,400 subscribers. So you decided to purchase 75,000 email credits from MailChimp. 75,000 email credits would cost $750 and for this amount of money you could send 1 email a month to each of your 2,400 subscribers for 31 months and you would’ve saved $180 over a monthly subscription for the same length of time with MailChimp’s Pay-As-You-Go credit plan.
However, if you take advantage of anything extra, like autoresponder emails for new sign ups and the like, you’ll probably end up sending enough emails to make the monthly account the more affordable option.

MailChimp’s Pro Service
MailChimp Pro is $199 a month IN ADDITION to your monthly paid account. The MailChimp Pro account lets you get super geeky with experimentations, data crunching, and super advanced segmentation and targeting. So say you’re really into A/B testing and want to take that testing to the next level; MailChimp’s Pro Service lets you create up to 8 variations of your campaigns.
Oh, and MailChimp Pro has a really nice feature that I could’ve used once: Stop Delivery. Stop Delivery lets you do just that, you get to stop the delivery of your campaign after you’ve already sent it. I had a ridiculous typo that went out once in one of my client’s SUBJECT LINES that I would’ve loved to have stopped. (Why bury a typo in the content of an email? Someone might miss it.)
You also get to crunch the data on campaign reports to your heart’s content with their advance MailChimp Pro reporting. This one feature could fascinate me for weeks on end, for sure.
MailChimp Pro will also give you access to MailChimp’s support staff that’s been trained just to help the MailChimp Pro customers; they know your needs are different than the average MailChimp client and they are trained to help your specific situations.
There’s more to MailChimp Pro than what I’m mentioning here. The big picture for this service is it is for the big kids or someone who has the extra $199 to invest in getting heavy with their email marketing. Most of us (under 5,000 in list size) probably aren’t grown up enough to even collect the data you really need to make this powerful tool worth it. Oh, and you’ll need someone on your staff who can actually dig in and use it and generate actions based off of the findings. So there’s that. It’s fabulous and I can’t wait to have a large enough list to use it.
Here’s tons of information about MailChimp’s Pro account:
The Takeaway
MailChimp has many pricing options that should fit most business’ needs. If you get into any level of email marketing or opt-in offers, you’ll want to do the monthly account so you can take advantage of autoresponders.
Also, understanding what is possible with MailChimp is important. For instance, I am amazed at how many people tell me they think MailChimp can’t do automation; MailChimp is fantastic at automation! Also, MailChimp is pretty rad with the level of customization you have for emails and sign-up forms in comparison to some of the other email marketing platforms.
I admit my bias as I talk about MailChimp. It talk about it as a big fan because, for me, MailChimp does all I need at a great price.
